What happens

This episode is a biography of actor Jay Jostyn, born Eugene J. Johnston in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1901. It follows his schooling, his 1928 marriage to actress Ruth Hill, and his early work with a telephone company and in theatrical stock companies. It then traces his radio career, beginning at WLW in Cincinnati in 1936 and moving to New York, where he appeared in Secret Agent K-7 Returns and took the title role of Mr. District Attorney from 1940 to 1952. The account describes his punishing schedule of live broadcasts and his move into television. It concludes with his later work and his death in Los Angeles in 1976 at age 74. The series is Secret Agent K-7 Returns.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Cincinnati, Ohio; New York; Los Angeles, California

Characters: Jay Jostyn, Ruth Hill, Walter Pigeon

Listen for: The description of Jostyn performing in as many as 35 scripted shows in one week, and his habit of observing real courtroom proceedings to prepare for the role of the district attorney.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
