What happens
Barnaby, a poor travelling juggler in medieval France, is taken in by a kindly young monk during a bitter winter. He is welcomed into a monastery, where he works humbly among educated brothers. As Christmas approaches, the other monks prepare fine gifts for God, while Barnaby feels he has nothing to offer. The story is part of the Screen Guild Theater series, broadcast on December 21, 1942. Ronald Colman and Nelson Eddy star, with John Nesbitt adapting Anatole France's legend.
Medieval France, a winter countryside road and a monastery during the Christmas season
Characters: Barnaby, the young monk, the abbot, Brother Maurice, Brother Marbaud, Brother Ambrose, Brother Joseph
Listen for: The monk's song on the mule, Balthazar's song at the monastery dinner, and the choir's performance on Christmas Day
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
