What happens

On New Year's Eve, young Harry Armstrong tells his grandfather, the Bishop, that he has fallen in love with Lucille, an actress and singer. The Bishop recalls his own youth, when as a young clergyman named Tom Armstrong he met the Italian opera singer Madame Cavallini at a reception held by Harry's grandfather. Their romance begins quickly and grows intense, and the Bishop's memories set up a conflict about the past that the transcript does not resolve. This is the Screen Guild Theater's Romance, broadcast July 9, 1945, starring Gregory Peck and Signe Hasso.

New Year's Eve, at the Bishop's study, with the Bishop's memories of a reception in New York about forty years earlier

Characters: Harry Armstrong, Bishop Armstrong, Tom Armstrong, Madame Cavallini, Rita

Listen for: The Bishop's account of meeting Madame Cavallini and the rising tension between Tom and Rita

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
