What happens

Whispering Smith, a railroad troubleshooter played by Alan Ladd, arrives at Medicine Bend in 1890 to investigate a run of train wrecks and missing freight. He meets Luke, a childhood friend, and Murray Sinclair, who runs the wrecking crew. Smith is sent to look into the losses by the railroad, and Luke is wounded by gunfire near the tracks. Smith is also drawn into the troubles of Marion, Murray's wife and an old friend, as suspicion falls on the men around the division. The episode is an adaptation of the 1949 film Whispering Smith, presented on the Screen Director's Playhouse series on September 16, 1949.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
