What happens

Ellen Grant, a naive new receptionist, joins the Richmond and Killcoin firm, which is secretly a bookmaking operation rather than the real estate business she assumes. Dick Richmond and his partner Killcoin find her cheerful blunders costly, especially when she takes an investment call and arranges a property purchase that threatens their illegal dealings. Ellen's enthusiasm for a low-cost housing project draws the partners into trouble with a rival gang led by Peggy Donato. The Screen Director's Playhouse adaptation of the 1950 film Miss Grant Takes Richmond, starring Lucille Ball in her original role, presents the story with director Lloyd Bacon.

A real estate office in an American city that is secretly a bookmaking operation, with a conference room, a front reception area, and a nearby low-cost housing site.

Characters: Ellen Grant, Dick Richmond, Killcoin, Peggy Donato, Judge Grant, Uncle Ben

Listen for: Ellen's cheerful "I'll just put in a doofer" approach to mistakes, and the moment she begins to suspect her employers' real business.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
