What happens

Captain Wang and General Chu lead a Red Army column of about ninety thousand soldiers on a long march to escape a Nationalist encirclement in southern China. Facing overwhelming enemy numbers and aircraft, the army uses diversionary maneuvers, seizes a ferry across the Yangtze under captured Nationalist uniforms, and wins a hard crossing of a river at a suspension bridge. Their journey through hostile territory and harsh mountains costs many lives. The episode is part of the NBC series The Pacific Story, first broadcast on October 22, 1944.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
