What happens

Mr. Whitfield, a longtime resident of Shanghai who has gambled his way through the city for years, reflects on the city's history of foreign control. The story follows him and his acquaintance Lo, a Chinese man drawn into the revolutionary movement, across decades of upheaval. Lo is shot during a 1925 protest, and Whitfield takes him in and nurses him back to health. Their friendship is tested as the Chinese push for a voice in the city's affairs, the Japanese move in, and fighting breaks out in 1937. The Pacific Story is a National Broadcasting Company series, and this episode aired on October 21, 1945. Sidney Miller plays Whitfield and Peter Chong plays Lo.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
