What happens
Narrator Chao Yung-zi returns to Nanking in 1945, flying in to accept the Japanese surrender after the city's long occupation. He recalls the city's history, including Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum and the Nationalist government's establishment there in the 1920s. He describes the 1937 bombing of Nanking and the massacre that followed the Japanese invasion, and the puppet government set up under Wang Ching-wei. The episode of The Pacific Story, broadcast by NBC in October 1945, ends with the formal surrender ceremony in the city's Central Military Academy auditorium.
