What happens
A young American fighter pilot, stationed on the Philippine island of Luzon in early 1945, reflects on the battle for the island as he waits for his plane to be serviced. The program traces why Luzon matters so much: its position between Japan and the Dutch Indies, its size and terrain, and the detailed Japanese intelligence gathered over decades before the 1941 invasion. It recounts the Japanese drives toward Manila, the defeat at Bataan and Corregidor, and an internment camp encounter between a captured American and a former collector of Chinese burial jars now serving as a Japanese guard. The Pacific Story is a documentary-drama series from the National Broadcasting Company, and this episode first aired on January 14, 1945.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
