What happens

Captain Mayo, an American, reports on the struggle over French Indochina in the closing months of the Second World War and the years after it. The Vietnamese professor, a leader of the Viet Minh movement, is questioned by the French after a raid on his quarters, and he argues that the Vietnamese people want independence from both the Japanese and the French. Mayo traces the rising nationalist movement, the Japanese takeover in March 1945 and the French proposals that followed. The episode is part of the Pacific Story series and first aired on November 11, 1945.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
