What happens

An engineer back from Malaya recounts the confusion of the region to an old friend named Rod. Britain struggles to unite the nine sultanates and the peninsula's mixed population of Malays, Chinese and Indians under a federation, while each group pursues its own interests. The story traces how the rubber and tin industries drew in outside labor, how colonial policies deepened ethnic rivalries, and how the Japanese occupation briefly united the people before postwar factions split them apart again. The episode is part of The Pacific Story, a 1946 United Nations-themed series, first broadcast on July 28, 1946.

Listen for: The Malayan Union announcement and the debate over whether Chinese and Indian residents should share political power with the Malays

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
