What happens
Sanger Rainsford, a hunter, survives a shipwreck and reaches a remote island, where he is taken in by General Zaroff, a wealthy Russian exile and skilled hunter. Over dinner, Zaroff explains that he has grown bored with ordinary game and now hunts men he considers worthy adversaries. Rainsford is horrified by the idea, and Zaroff makes clear that his guest's fate depends on the choice he makes. The episode is an adaptation of Richard Connell's story The Most Dangerous Game, broadcast on The Mercury Theatre on the Air in 1943, with Orson Welles as General Zaroff and Keenan Wynn as Rainsford.
A remote island with dense jungle, swamps and cliffs, and General Zaroff's castle overlooking the sea.
Characters: Sanger Rainsford, General Zaroff, Ivan, Whitney
Listen for: Zaroff's calm description of hunting men, and Rainsford's growing dread as he realizes what is being asked of him.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
