What happens
The Shadow, Lamont Cranston, learns that a blind beggar named Singing Jim has been beaten to death in an alley after refusing to pay protection money to a pair of street racketeers. Cranston and his companion Margot Lane visit the hospital, where Jim, in his delirium, pleads with his attackers and tells them he cannot pay. Apple Mary, a fellow street vendor, gathers the beggars together to discuss how they are being squeezed for money by the racketeers, and the Shadow appears to offer help. The story follows the beggars' plan to stand against the men who are extorting them and the trap the racketeers set in return.
A city's street-corner and alley world of beggars and petty racketeers, including a hospital, a meeting place for the beggars, and a basement hideout.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
