What happens

At the start of the Pickwick Club's first expedition, Samuel Pickwick sets out with his companions Nathaniel Winkle, Augustus Snodgrass and Tracy Tupman to study the customs of the landed gentry of southern England. On a coach to Rochester they meet the smooth-talking Alfred Jingle, who tells tales of his romantic conquests. The party arrives at Dingley Dell, the home of the hospitable Mr. Wardle, where Tupman pursues the lady Rachel Wardle. This episode is the 20th broadcast of The Mercury Theater on the Air, adapted from Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers, with Orson Welles playing Alfred Jingle. The original air date was November 20, 1938.

Late 1820s England, moving from London's Golden Cross to Rochester and the country house of Dingley Dell in Suffolk.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
