What happens

Leslie Crosby, the wife of a rubber planter in Malaya, shoots Jeff Hammond at her bungalow one night. Her husband Robert and their attorney Howard Joyce help her face the consequences as the case moves toward trial. This Lux Radio Theatre production, presented by Cecil B. DeMille, stars Betty Davis, Herbert Marshall and James Stevenson in the 1941 broadcast of the play The Letter, aired on April 21, 1941. Lux Radio Theatre adapts Somerset Maugham's drama about a jungle back-country plantation, a woman's account of what happened that night, and the difficult questions her lawyer must ask as the account begins to change.

A rubber plantation bungalow in the jungle back country north of Singapore, and later Singapore itself, during the 1930s in British Malaya.

Characters: Leslie Crosby, Robert Crosby, Howard Joyce, Jeff Hammond, John Withers, Misha

Listen for: Leslie Crosby's account of the night Hammond came to the bungalow, and the moment Howard Joyce confronts her with the letter.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
