What happens
On a rubber plantation near Singapore, Leslie Crosby shoots a man who has broken into her house while her husband Robert is away. The Lux Radio Theatre presents this 1938 episode, adapted from William Somerset Maugham's story The Letter, with Merle Oberon as Leslie, Walter Houston as Robert, Ralph Forbes as Jeffrey Hammond and Eric Snowden as Howard Joyce. Leslie insists the intruder was a thief, but the coroner questions her account after fingerprints on a glass are found. Her husband and lawyer press her for the truth as her trial approaches, and she begins to reveal her past connection to the dead man.
A rubber plantation near Singapore, in the Malay Peninsula, and later the Singapore courthouse and prison, in the 1930s.
Characters: Leslie Crosby, Robert Crosby, Howard Joyce, Jeffrey Hammond, Chung, Sergeant Jenkins, Mr. Bentley
Listen for: Leslie's shifting accounts of the shooting, and the coroner's questions about the fingerprints on the glass.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
