What happens

Bob Hope and Carole Lombard star as David and Anne Smith, a newlywed couple who discover their marriage may not be legally valid because of a licensing error. The Lux Radio Theatre broadcast of Mr. and Mrs. Smith aired on June 9, 1941, and is adapted from the RKO film. David and Anne have a playful, combative marriage governed by a set of rules, and their household is full of quarrels and reconciliations. A visit from a man named Harry Deaver brings news of the problem, and Anne begins to reconsider her commitment to David. The broadcast follows their growing tension as their relationship is tested. The events shown here cover the early stages of the dispute and the first signs of its effects on their marriage.

New York City and the town of Beecham, in the late 1930s and early 1940s, including the Smiths' apartment, David's law office, and a restaurant called Mama Lucy's.

Characters: David Smith, Anne Smith, Lily, Martha, Jeff, Harry Deaver, Mrs. Krausheimer, Chuck Benson

Listen for: The Smiths' rule-based quarrels and their reconciliations, Harry Deaver's announcement about the invalid marriage, and the restaurant scene with the cat and the soup.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
