What happens

Private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by Adrian Fromsett, an editor at Kingsby Publications, to find Crystal Kingsby, the estranged wife of her employer Derace Kingsby. Marlowe's search leads him to Chris Laverie, a man Crystal reportedly ran off with, and then to a mountain lake retreat where a woman has been found dead. As Marlowe digs into the tangled relationships among these characters, he learns that Laverie has been shot, and the investigation turns toward who among them had a gun. This episode is the first part of Lux Radio Theatre's adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, broadcast on February 9, 1948, with Robert Montgomery and Audrey Totter in the leading roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
