What happens
Brad Roberts, a young songwriter, is offered a show deal by Barney Hopkins, a manager who needs money to stage his production. Brad's fellow boarders, Carol King and Polly Parker, are struggling performers who share a room and take turns going out on job hunts. When Brad puts up fifteen thousand dollars to fund the show on the condition that Polly is featured, Carol is caught between her rivalry with Brad and her friendship with Polly. The Lux Radio Theatre presents this radio version of the Warner Brothers picture Gold Diggers, starring Joan Blondell and Dick Powell, first broadcast on December 21, 1936. Dick Powell and Joan Blondell appear in the leading roles.
A theatrical boarding house on the top floor, two blocks west of Broadway, and various New York theatres and clubs.
Characters: Brad Roberts, Carol King, Polly Parker, Trixie, Barney Hopkins, J. Lawrence Bradford
Listen for: Brad's songs and Carol's sharp exchanges with Brad and Trixie.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
