What happens

In 1883 on a small ranch near San Diego, young John Montgomery builds a glider and quietly tests it with his brother Jim and his friend Regina, a visitor from San Francisco. His father, a political man, worries that talk of flying will harm his career, and the family urges John to give up his machine. John secretly takes the craft to Otay Mesa at dawn and gets it airborne for a short flight, after which the family learns of it. Later, Santa Clara College offers him a teaching position where he can continue his experiments. This is the Lux Radio Theatre production Gallant Journey, first broadcast on November 11, 1946, starring Glenn Ford and Janet Blair.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
