What happens

John Thompson, driving alone west from New York, picks up a young woman named Anne on a lonely highway. As the drive goes on, Johnny grows uneasy about her and about the radio music, and the night takes a strange turn. A diner, a drifter who rides along, and a stop beside a stream all shape the drive. The Inner Sanctum Mysteries series, first broadcast on August 31, 1952, presents this episode, with the Inner Sanctum's usual creaking-door framing.

A highway west of New York, a roadside diner, and a small town at night

Characters: John Thompson, Anne, Joe

Listen for: The radio music that upsets the young woman, and the strange events of the late-night drive

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
