What happens

Happy Dolan, a drifter in Reno, is marched to a river by a stranger after asking for a flophouse, and nearly drowns before he is pulled out by a woman named Jessie. Later he finds a wallet, is stopped by a man named Simon O'Toole, and is staked to gambling money in exchange for half of his future. Dolan then marries Jessie, who suddenly refuses to go through with it, and he is pursued by a man calling himself Smith. The transcript covers only the first part of the story, and Dolan's situation grows more dangerous as the night unfolds.

Reno, Nevada, a late-night city of casinos, drugstores and wedding chapels, with a river on its outskirts and a railroad line leading toward Chicago

Characters: Happy Dolan, Jessie, Simon O'Toole, Smith

Listen for: The weighing machine cards and the claim check on Dolan's future, which set up the rest of the story

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
