What happens

Julie Carey and her husband Roger face a painful split after years of marriage, shaped by the loss of a child and the struggles of their early life together. Julie reflects on their history through a collection of records, recalling how they met in New York, moved to Westchester and later adopted a little girl named Trina. The adaptation is presented on the Hallmark Playhouse, a radio series, in an episode first broadcast on July 1, 1948. Hosted by novelist James Hilton, the story is taken from Martha Gellhorn's novel and presented as a dramatization.

New York, San Francisco, Japan and Westchester County, New York, in the years between the 1920s and the 1940s

Characters: Julie Carey, Roger Carey, Trina, Philip Carey, Applejack Jones, Miss Oliver

Listen for: Julie's memories set to the records she plays, and the couple's conversation about whether their marriage can be saved

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
