What happens

Christopher Bell, a man of 52, climbs the west face of the Shallyock glacier in the Swiss Alps, hanging beneath an overhang with his strength failing. The Escape episode Action, from the series Escape, first aired on 1949-07-21. Joseph Kearns plays Mr. Bell, with Maria Palmer among the cast. Through a series of encounters, the story traces Bell's recent past, from his decision to hand over his London business to his employee, to the strange change in his manner before he left England. His reasons for coming to the mountains begin to emerge as he is drawn back toward life.

The Swiss Alps, around the Shallyock glacier, and the village inn, with flashbacks to London.

Characters: Christopher Bell, Jean Vazure, Madame Gaspard, Matthew, John Huxford, Jenkins, Dr. Garland, Anna Garland

Listen for: Mr. Bell's words on the glacier about action and incentive, and his bargain with Anna Garland on the ridge.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
