What happens
Tompkins, a ventriloquist, performs in a nightclub with his wooden dummy Toby, and his act is disrupted by a rival, Mel Lazwell, who seems interested in Toby. Tension builds between the two men, particularly after Tompkins notices Lazwell's attention toward Mrs. Lazwell. Tompkins becomes increasingly unsettled and fixated on Toby, and his behavior grows erratic. The police inspector questions Tompkins about the quarrel and the shooting of Lazwell, and Tompkins insists he is the one who fired. This is the Escape series episode, first broadcast on February 28, 1947, with a cast led by Tompkins's character as portrayed in the adaptation of the motion picture.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
