What happens

Alice, a schoolteacher, comes to Eli and Jenny Jenkins' parlor early one evening for their advice. She must decide whether to stay in the town or leave on the late train to join a man she feels obligated to because he paid her mother's hospital bills. Eli and Jenny gather with their friends for a singing rehearsal, where the townsfolk gossip about Alice, Cliff and Ben. Ben and Cliff both seem attentive to her, and the group practices songs for an upcoming sociable and a wedding. The episode is the first in the Down Our Way series.

A small country town, down our way, centred on the Jenkins' parlor and general store.

Characters: Alice, Eli Jenkins, Jenny Jenkins, Patience, Ben, Cliff

Listen for: Alice's dilemma about the train and the money she owes, and the townsfolk's reactions during the singing rehearsal.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
